In classic figurative oil painting Johannes Sivertsen explorer and challenges art history and our different views of it. In his paintings he examines the conditions for what it is we are looking at and what we see. What and who appears both in the history of painting and in historical painting, as well as what and who remains overlooked, absent, ignored. However, this conceptual and socially engaged approach to painting is not necessarily obvious at first glance. The first impression one gets when met by Johannes Sivertsen’s paintings is the skillfull and seducing way the paintings are done, the perfect execution they present. Then, one starts wondering about the stories behind the motifs, what the artist wants us to talk about. In that sense, Johannes Sivertsen shows us the power and the potential for great storytelling which is inherent in painting as a media. Sivertsen has worked continously with naturalistic, figurative paintings in series, which revisit classic genres and motifs, from still lifes, landscape painting, historic painting, as well as in illusionist trompe-l’œil images.
