Poul Pedersen

The painter Poul Pedersen paints letters. Originally working as a painter of houses and signs, Poul Pedersen became part of a group of avantgarde artists, poets etc in the 1960’s and began working as an artist.
Among Poul Pedersen's main works, The Stolen Alphabet must be highlighted. For a number of years, Poul Pedersen has sought out famous paintings that contain letters in order - at times with great public attention - to copy the letters on a canvas. An A from a painting by Picasso, an H from Robert Rauschenberg, a P from Mondrian, a Q from Asger Jorn, etc. For each of his paintings, he has written a small text on the painting from which the letter was stolen. 24 years after beginning his theft, Poul Pedersen finished the series, 25 letters, and he then donated the complete Stolen Alphabet to the State Library in Aarhus, DK. As Poul Pedersen stated, the painters had stolen the letters from the authors, and now he had stolen them from the painters, sending them back to live among the books.
Over the years Poul Pedersen has done other alphabets, such as The Alphabet without letters, consisting of 25 monochrome - yellow, red or blue - canvases, each color representing a feature of the letters…. Born in Denmark, Poul Pedersen has lived and worked in Paris since the 1970’s.
