CAMILLA THORUP

In our online feature SPECTA presents a selection of ceramics, prints, paper works and bronze by Danish artist CAMILLA THORUP.

In her work, Camilla Thorup is driven by an interest in human beings and the human psyche as it is expressed through the timeless stories, we all have in common. Her motifs are most often animals and people. As a start, Thorup works intuitively and when in this process, she leaves room for the subconscious; a world where logic, gravity and rationality are not ruling.

This approach results in figures which are interacting in multiple ways. Humans keep each other buckled down, they perform balancing acts, and they constitute a whole. At times elements from nature merge with humans, and animals are equally significant as humans.

The personality of the figures border stereotypes. They are not defined by age, class, nationality, or time, but transcend the various groups that exist in our society, and in that way, Camilla Thorup’s figures represent all of us. Her sculptural works as well as in her paintings, the compositions of the figures are often not realistic, and the figures are not in our scale. In this way we are allowed to understand Thorup’s works more as relations and states rather than actual positions or personalities.
The relation between humans and nature is an often visited topic in Thorup’s works. Animals and plants can act as both anxiety provoking elements, something uncanny, as well as part of humans or in symbiosis with humans. In this way, Camilla Thorup pints to our ambigous relation to the nature we, after all, are part of.

Camilla Thorup (DK, 1976) obtained her MFA at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2008. She lives and works in Copenhagen. Thorup has since finishing her studies, been working in the field of painting and drawing, however, in recent years, Thorup has focused on three-dimensional works and she is now making sculptures in ceramics, bronze, and concrete. Thorup has also curated and co-curated gallery shows and museums exhibition. Her work has been shown in museums, galleries and art institutions in Denmark and abroad, as well as in public commisions.
